WHAT IS A MANGA ARTIST?

In the opening scene of The Magic Rabbit, there is a credit, "A h omage to manga artist Fujio Akatsuka". What is a manga artist and who is Fujio Akatsuka?
Manga is the Japanese word for a comic/cartoon. Manga artist refers specifically to Japanese comic artists.
Fujio Akatsuka is a legend. He is a manga pioneer in Japan. His works are literary appreciated by all generations. Youngsters love them for their slapstick humor and simplicity of style; older readers admired them for their ingenious puns and their biting social satire. He developed his anarchic style in the '50s and early '60s, drawing his influences from his favorite knockabout movie comedians - Jerry Lewis, The Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin.
He helped turn manga into the multi-billion yen business it is today. He received the Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology's Award in 1997 and the Purple Ribbon Medal for his artistic achievement in 1998.
